Artist Research Week 2: Vantage Point

Week 2 Vantage Point Artist Research

Artist 1
Herbert List

Herbert List, Master and Dog, 1936
Herbert List, Wrestling Boys, 1933

Herbert List was born in 1903. He was a German Photographer. Between 1924-1928 he started taking photographs for fun during travels with a coffee business. From 1937-1939 Greece became List's main interest for photography, after his first visit to the antique temples, sculptures, and landscapes. His first solo show opened in Paris in the summer of 1937. Publications in "Life", "Photographie", "Verve", and "Harper's Bazzar" followed, and he became associated with Magnum Photo's. He was nfluenced by his Magnum Photo's College Henri Cartier-Bresson (Who is my second Artist Bellow). List gave up photography in early 1960's, and died in Munich on April 4th 1975.

Top Image (Dog). I Love this image, mainly because dogs are one of my favorite animals along with horses. This image was taken from a lower angle and makes the dog look very proud and from the lower angle makes it almost seem like it has a higher status. I think this image was taken with a more narrow depth of field as to me it seems like the back hills are a lot more blurred than the main subjects of the image.

Bottom Image (Wrestling Boys). I think this image is really creative in how it's taken. I love how you can't see the boys faces fully, and their arms kinda make a revolving shape. Your eye when looking at this image doesn't really know where to look, which I think is quite creative. I also like how you can't really see anything but the boys as the background is completely white. I think this Image was taken at a more level angle.

Artist 2
Henri Cartier-Bresson

Henri Cartier-Bresson, Simiane-La-Rotonde, France, 1969
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Siphnos, Greece, 1961

Henri Cartier-Bresson was born in 1908. He was a French Photographer. His Human, Spontaneous Photographs helped establish Photojournalism as an art form. In the 1930's Henri purchased his first 35mm Lecia, a camera whose simple style and stunning results would help define Henri's work. In the 1930's he's also showed his work in major exhibits in Mexico, New York, and Madrid. His images revealed the early raw possibilities of street photography and photojournalism in general. In 1947 he teamed up with Robert Capa, George Rodger, David 'Chim' Seymour, and William Vandivert, and founded Magnum Photos, One of the world premier photo agencies.

Top Image (1969). I really love this image. I love how there is a lot of mirroring going on from the two girls in the back to the boys legs in the front. This image also has the Fore, Mid, and Back contrasts with the boys in the front, The dog in the middle and the people and the wall in the back.

Bottom Image (1961). This image also has the Fore, Mid, and Back contrast if you look directly down the middle. The stairs as the fore, the girl as the mid, and the walls and  houses in the back. This image was taken as a Wide Depth of Field and and with a slightly higher angle.

  1. Great comments Alex! You have chosen two good examples of Cartier Bresson's use of fore mid and background
