Research: File Formats Week 2

Week 2 File Formats

DNG

What is DNG?
DNG is an open lossless raw image file format written and invented by adobe and used for digital photography. It was created to store image data in a generic, highly compatible format, and is considered to be a RAW Image File.

DNG Advantages
1. Once a Raw File is converted to DNG, it can work with any software that can read DNG Format.
2. DNG Files are smaller than RAW Files and can be made smaller if minimal or no JPEG preview is stored within the file.
3. Changes to Images can be written directly into DNG files without having to create a separate sidebar.
4. DNG files are capable of storing full or Original RAW files.

DNG Disadvantages
1. Conversion from RAW to DNG takes extra time during the importing process.
2. Changes are written into DNG files, which means you will have to back up an entire DNG file whenever you make changes to it.
3. DNG doesn't work with all manufacturer image processing programs, for example Nikon's Capture NX product.
4. DNG takes out some of the unrecognized meta data from RAW files, making it impossible to retrieve this data from DNG in the future.

RAW

What is RAW?
RAW Files are a truly RAW lossless File Format. RAW is almost unprocessed data coming directly from the camera's sensor. RAW files preserve the most amount of information about an image and generally contain more colours and dynamic range than other formats. It's a propriety format that is tied to the camera manufactures and sensor, and therefore not supported by all software products.

RAW Advantages
1. RAW files contain full JPEG previews that were processed by the camera, using the setting you were on when you shot the image.
2. RAW files store other camera specific data such as focus point and picture controls as well as basic exposure information.
3. RAW files are fully supported by their manufacturers and work with camera specific software packages.

RAW Disadvantages
1. Although RAW images work with some specific software packages, not all software packages can open RAW.
2. Because RAW files cannot be modified by third party software, settings need to be stored in a separate file, which means more storage and tougher file management.
3. RAW files can take longer to load and might not always be able to load.

PSD

What is PSD?
PDS is a Large Lossless File Format used in adobe Photoshop. PSD Stands for Photoshop Document it is the default format that PS uses for saving it's data. PSD is a propriety file that allows the user to work with the images individual layers even after that file has been saved.

PSD Advantages
1.Because PSD files are large they can save a significant amount of information and data which is a good choice for working files.
2. PSD can preserve and handle layers making them suitable for importing and exporting data from Adobe programs.

PSD Disadvantages
1. PSD files are extremely large, since lossless images use no compression.
2. PSD files can be hard to email or transfer.
3. You can only use PSD files in Adobe Programs.

TIFF

What is TIFF
TIFF can either be a Lossy file format depending on the settings you choose or a Lossless File Format. TIFF is a common file format for enhancing faster graphics (bitmap) images between application programs, including those for scanner images. A TIFF file can be identified with either TIFF or TIF. TIFF files are commonly used  in desktop publishing, faxing, 3-D Applications, and medical image applications.

TIFF Advantages
1. TIFF is a file format recognized by most computers, cross capable with both Mac and PC's.
2. TIFF is good for printing, usually used with printers and Photo Lab.
3. Good Quality Images.

TIFF Disadvantages
1. TIFF is a large file size and takes up a lot of room in the computer.
2. Most website and online image gallery's do not support TIFF uploading.
3. TIFF files are slow to import.

JPEG

What is JPEG
JPEG is a Lossy File Format and a common file format for digital photos and other digital graphics. It is a standard method of compressing Photographic Images. It is known as JPEG, JIFI, JPG, or JPE, but JPG is the most common on all platforms. JPEG is most commonly used for storing and transmitting photographs on the internet.

JPEG Advantages
1. JPEG has a highly controlled degree of compression,
2. Small File Size
3. JPEG is compatible and is displayed correctly in any browser, text and graphics programs, on all computers, tablets, and mobile devices.
4. Suitable for full-colour realistic images with a lot of colour and contrast transitions.

JPEG Disadvantages
1. Image may fall apart into individual squares.
2. JPEG is less suitable for working with text monochrome graphics with clear boundaries.
3, Every next step of compressing a JPEG degrades it's quality.
