Artist Research Week 1: Shutter

Week 1 Shutter Artist Research

Artist 1
Helen Levitt

                                                 Helen Levitt, New York, 1983
Helen Levitt, New York, 1945

Helen Levitt was born in 1913. In the 1940's Helen took many Photographs on the Streets of New York. Her work was never intended to tell a story or document a social thesis. She took Photographs in poorer neighborhoods because there were more people out on the streets and street life was more  sociable and visually interesting. Most of Helen's images show children playing and people out and about in their everyday live's, which is revealed as being filled with qualities of art as if the streets were a stage, and the people are the actors and dancers within.

The Top Image (1983), I feel was shot with a Medium Shutter Speed. The lady and umbrella are really sharp while everything behind is slightly blurred. Also probably would have been shot Hand Held. When I look at this image, to me it looks kinda like the lady is standing in front of a poster of the man running.

The Bottom Image (1945), I feel was shot using a Fast Shutter Speed. The background and foreground of this image look clear and sharp. This image also would have been shot Hand Held.

Artist 2
Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon, Marilyn Monroe, Actress, May 6 1957
Richard Avedon, Brigitte Bardot, January 1959

Richard Avedon was born in 1923. Richard was an American Fashion and Portrait Photographer. He was a leading Photographer for Vogue and photographed most of the covers from 1973-1988. He photographed for a Calvin Klein Jeans Campaign  featuring a fifteen year old Brooke Shields and photographed many celebrities including The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, and  Brigitte Bardot. In addition to his continuing fashion work, he began Studio portraits of  Civil Rights Workers and Politicians. He then branched out to photograph patients in Mental Hospitals, The Civil Rights Movement in 1963, protesters in the Vietnam War, and later the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Top Image (Marilyn Monroe), This image has a lot of clarity on Marilyn and a blurred background.  I feel this shot was done using a Medium Shutter Speed.

The Bottom Image (Brigitte Bardot), I feel this image was taken using a slow Shutter Speed. Everything in this image is sharp BUT her hair looks like it's moving, this wouldn't have been able to be achieved without a slower shutter speed.

Camera Use Week 1: Shutter.

Week 1 Shutter

In Class Exercise

Shutter Speed 1/10    Fstop 29.0    IOS 100

This Image was taken using a Slower Shutter Speed of 1/10. With Lower Shutter Speeds being more sensitive to movement because of a longer exposure time, I had the Camera on a Tripod so it didn't pick up the movement of my hands while taking the Image, as I wanted the whole Image to look clear and sharp. I found that being in the Light made the whole image turn white so I choose to have Aroha stand in the shade so not to Over Expose the Image.

Shutter Speed 1/250    Fstop 8.0    IOS 100

This Image was taken using a Fast shutter speed of 1/250. I took this image hand held as the shutter speed was fast enough to not get blur from the movement of my hands. I had trouble with the focus on Aroha as she jumped this was the only sharp Image I got. I didn't think ahead with how high she was gonna jump and as a result the top of her head and her hands we're taking out of the Images

Shutter Speed 1/80    Fstop 7.1    IOS 100

This Image was taken using a Medium Shutter Speed of 1/80. I took this Image hand held.  I wanted the background to look slightly blurry with Aroha sharp and I feel this image follows through with that. I would have liked the image more centered BUT I like the image despite.

                                               Shutter Speed 1/100    Fstop 8.0    IOS 100

This Image was also taken using a Medium Shutter Speed, this time 1/100. I took this Image Hand Held. Instead of Moving like my last image. I wanted this image as a still shot, clear and sharp. I don't like the car in the background of the image but I do like how Aroha's shirt looks really red against the black of the car.

Shutter Speed 1/10    Fstop 10.0    IOS 100

This is one of my best images taken while panning with a slower shutter speed of 1/10. I had the center focus focused on Aroha as she walked so her head and body came out sharp and clear while her Arms, Legs and everything moving became out of focus, so to create a moving effect. Cause of the lower shutter speed being sensitive to movement I had the camera on a Tripod so I didn't completely blur the Image.  Because of the bright Light outside I choose to take this images under shade so not to over expose the image.

Shutter Speed Week 1

Self Directed Task

Shutter Speed 1"    Fstop 11.0   IOS 100

This is one of my Favorite Light drawing Images. I took this Image on a Tripod and with a Slow Shutter speed of 1". I used my mum and I's Phones on flashlight to achieve this look. I asked my sister to move her arms slow and flowy and I am really happy with how it turned out.  I had so much fun taking these, I found it hard to pick just two I liked for this blog.

Shutter Speed 1"   Fstop 5.6   IOS 100

I took this Image also on a Tripod using two cell phone flashlights with a Slow Shutter Speed of 1". I like how this image isn't fully black with drawing like the last one. I love how you can see my sister in the middle of the two lights, to me it looks almost as if she has glowing wings and I think it's a really cool effect. I cropped this image as on the left side you could see the side of our house and I felt it took away from the image.

Shutter Speed 1"   Fstop 4.0   IOS 100

I took these Images with two different types of lighting to see how it looked, This Image I took with Dark behind me and more Light in front and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I asked my sister to spin from one door frame to the other. I love how ghostly it looks down the hallway I also love how you can see her feet and as you go up the shape gets lighter almost like the shape could be a ghost. I took this Image with a slow shutter speed of 1" and on a Tripod.

Shutter Speed 1"   Fstop 4.0   IOS 100

I took this image with darkness behind and in front with Light through the Middle, for a different effect. I asked my sister this time to walk from door frame to door frame. I love how this time you can see my sister clearly but it still has that ghostly effect. I cropped this image as I felt having the image landscape didn't work quite as well with this lighting as it did with the last image. I took this image on a Tripod with the shutter speed of 1".

Shutter Speed 1/250   Fstop 3.5   IOS 100

I took this still shot of my sister "Richenda" on Saturday with a faster Shutter Speed of 1/250. I asked her to stand towards the sun and face me so I could get the nice lighting on her shirt and side of her face. When i took this image the  lighting was darker and i didn't like it that much so I brightened the colour in editing. I took this Image hand held.

Shutter Speed 1/10   Fstop 20.0   IOS 100

I love this Image so much. This is my Pony Dakota :D. I took this image using a Slower Shutter speed of 1/10 and took is using a Tripod. This image was quite hard to get as we had trouble getting her to run up and down the paddock so I could pan her running and I had trouble getting a sharp image of her as I couldn't get the center focus on her BUT after a few goes I got it and I love the result :) I brightened the colour as it was darker and overcast when i took the image and sharpened it which I think made the effect look really cool, I also Cropped the image in editing.
