Camera Use Week 5: Direct, Reflect, and Diffused Light

Week 5 Direct, Reflected, and Diffused Light

In Class Exercise

1. Take an Image with your subjects back to the sun without a reflector.

Shutter Speed 1/400   Fstop 7.1   ISO 400

I took this Image of barbie with the sun behind her with no reflector. I edited this Image in Photoshop Raw by upping the Contrast and taking the Blacks down. I tried using the adjustment brush on this image to correct the sky and Barbies hair BUT it didn't look right so I left it how it is.

2. Take a Photograph using reflectors to introduce light into your subjects Face.

Shutter Speed 1/1000   Fstop 7.1   ISO 400

This is my reflector Image, this time with a Gold reflector pointed towards Barbie's Face. As you can see compared to the above image her face has more of a gold glow compared to the above image where the lighting is more natural. You can also see in the bottom image that the reflector is blocking some of the light from hitting barbie's face making barbie's face appear darker in comparison to the top image.

3. Take a few images experimenting with the White, Gold, Silver, and Black Reflectors.

                                          1. Silver
Shutter Speed 1/1000   Fstop 7.1   ISO 400

                                          2. White
Shutter Speed 1/1000   Fstop 7.1   ISO 400

                                          3. Gold
Shutter Speed 1/1000   Fstop 7.1   ISO 400

                                          4. Black
Shutter Speed 1/1000   Fstop 7.1   ISO 400

These are my Images taken with Reflectors. The First Image "Silver" As you can see in comparison to the others the Silver reflector is quite Bright, and gives of a cooler colour effect.
The second Image "White" As you can see in this Image there isn't to much of a difference in Lighting BUT Caryline looks quite a bit darker compaird to the subjects in the other images as the White reflector is blocking light from getting through.
The Third Image "Gold" This Reflector gives of a lot of light as well compaird to especially the White and Black reflectors. This reflector gives of a warmer tone as well.
The Fourth Image "Black" As you can see in this image there isn't much of a difference In Lighting BUT maybe seems a little darker on the side of Aimee's face.

4. Take a Portrait in a shadowed Area and then use a Reflector to diffuse the Light.

Shutter Speed 1/125   Fstop 7.1   ISO 400
Shutter Speed 1/125   Fstop 7.1   ISO 400

These are my images I used for Shadows and diffuse. I can't remember which images were which so I kinda guess by how they looked. I'm guessing the first image was one of our shadow images without any reflector. There doesn't seem to be any shine or darkening on her and the lighting looks quite natural to me. The Bottom Image I'm guessing was done using a Gold reflector. Her face seems to have a gold glow as well as her hair. The shadowing on her face is softer too.
I edited both these Images in Photoshop Raw. The Top Image I took the Shadows and Exposure down to make the shadows stand out more. The Bottom Image I took the Exposure down and Contrast up and took the blacks down, to give more detail and to show more of the shadowing.

Self Directed Task

1. Take a few Images experimenting with the White, Gold, Silver, and Black Reflectors.

Before and After

Black Reflector: This is my self directed Image with what I think was the black reflector? I can't remember which was which the gold and silver ones were quite obvious but I couldn't tell between the white and black. Pretty sure this one was Black though. As you can tell in comparison to the Silver and Black Reflector Images, though it is quite a bit darker as it's letting less light through, being a darker reflector it cuts a lot of sunlight out as you can tell from the other images. I also edited this image in the basic's panel, I upped the Vibrance mainly to try and make the grass in the background greener, took the contrast up, and took the highlights all the way down.

Shutter Speed 1/160   Fstop 4.0   ISO 100

Silver Reflector: As you can see with the silver reflector the lighting is quite a bit brighter especially in comparison to the black reflector above, as the sliver colour is reflecting more light through onto the subject. I was going to edit this image but decided not to so you could see the comparison with the brightness and colour of the image.

Before and After

Gold Reflector: This is my Gold Reflector Image, As you can see again in comparison to the Black Reflector, the gold is reflecting more light onto the subject same as the Silver above. It also gives the image a more warmer feeling in comparison to the silver. In Photoshop RAW I edited this Image by going to the basic's panel and Taking the Vibrance up to help make the grass in the background greener, I took the Highlights down to make the sky clearer, Took the shadows down to try and make the ground a little lighter. And took the Oranges up a tiny bit by going into the HSL/Greyscale Panel. I think I may have over edited this image a bit BUT I still think it looks okay :)

Shutter Speed 1/160   Fstop 6.3   ISO 100
Before and After

White Reflector: This is my White Reflector Image. As you can see it is lighter than the black reflector BUT hasn't got the light reflecting quite as much like the Gold and Silver Reflectors as the white is blocking a bit of the light from getting through. I edited this image in Photoshop RAW's Basic's Panel by taking the Highlights down for the sky and taking the saturation up by a tiny bit to slightly make the grass a little greener.

2. Take a Portrait in a Shadowed Area and then use a Reflector to Diffuse the Light.

Shutter Speed 1/640   Fstop 11.0   ISO 400

I took this at our new Rental House as we have officially Moved. I liked the pattern of the shadows so asked my sister to sit so the shadows were going across her side. This was taken without a reflector.

Shutter Speed 1/640  Fstop 11.0   ISO 400

I took this image  with a reflector. I had no one to help me hold the reflector so it didn't work as well as I hoped BUT you can tell the lighting it a bit brighter and Golder than the first image. I didn't have the same reflector as I had with the guitar images either so was a little harder BUT I'm still happy :)
